Teak wood ( Tectona grandis ) is one of indonesian native trees that can grow very large in massive diameters, although the big teak tree is very rare nowadays because excessive forest exploitation. Teak is well known for its beautiful grain and the durability over and extreme weather resistance. We are indonesian people use the wood long before the colonialism to make a precious palace, temple, houses and also boats and ships. The durability of the teak come from the rich natural oil content that continuously protect the wood grain from excessive damage. They seal their pores with oil and rubber content so the further damage is not happening to the planks core. while the outside layer of the planks will turn gray due the weather exposure. This is a major reason why we use teak for outdoor furniture
Another reason why we use this wood is..well..they are gorgeous, Their wood grain is so beautiful and it will stay like that for years to come, a little discoloration will appear when we put them weather exposed, they will become grey patina colors which is also very attractive. the teak wood is also very hard so the termite an another wood germs doesn’t have enough strong “teeth” to chew it. Nobody what their teak outdoor furniture crawled by those insects and end up in the fire place. that’s why we have to use hard wood against those insects.
