Tenon mortise joints are without a doubt the most used joinery on furniture construction. it has been used for thousands of years by woodworkers around the world to join pieces of wood, especially when the joining pieces connect at an angle of 90°. In its basic form it is both simple and strong. Although there are many joint variations, the basic mortise and tenon comprises two components, the mortise is the hole and the tenon is tongue. The tenon, formed on the end of a member generally referred to as a rail, is inserted into a square or rectangular hole cut into the corresponding member. The tenon is cut to fit the mortise hole exactly and usually has shoulders that seat when the joint fully enters the mortise hole. The joint may be glued, pinned, or wedged to lock it in place. There are so many type of tenon mortise joint used on furniture constructions, but in our indonesian furniture company we only use few of them, they are :
- Stub Tenon Corner Joint
It is used for table tops or chair backrest.
- Pinned Corner Tenon Mortise Joints
Same as corner stub but with adding pin for extra strength
- Haunch Tenon Mortise Joints
Usually used for tabel top slats
- Feather Mortise Tenon Joints
A modern feather tenon mortise joint (primarily called a loose tenon)
There is few way to make a tenon mortise joints, we can use hand and chisels and hand saw or we can use fully automatic tenon mortiser machine. We mainly make tenon mortise jaoin with chisel mortiser and table saw. in addition we also use hand router to make mortise hole. we find out this technique to be more efficient on a regular basic.
